Artist Bio - Lisa Carol Williams
I love being creative whether it's for an illustrative painting, a website, or an organization's event poster. My work often involves using with rich, vivid materials, sometimes it's oil paint on canvas other times it's the endless colors choices available on the computer. I enjoy working with a variety of media and divide my creative energy between the canvas and the computer, where I create using drawing apps on the Ipad and I also work in illustration, photo collage, graphic design, and web design. Lately I have been experimenting with different styles and techniques in part because of my love of art history and the vast number of incredible artists whose work I enjoy and find inspirational. Some of my favorite artists are Kandinsky, Miro, Hopper, O'Keeffe, Matisse, and Rivera, just to name a few.
My academic study in art began at the University of Texas where I majored in art history with a minor in studio art (BFA 1985). I earned a master’s degree in art history from the University of Virginia (MA 1990).
Upon completion of my master’s degree I worked at the College of William and Mary's Muscarelle Museum of Art as their Curator of Education. I trained docents in art history, wrote public relations material and curated a series of small exhibitions. I also taught modern and survey art history courses at a local community college before eventually teaching art to upper-level high school students for 12 years. I taught a variety of studio art courses: painting, drawing, 3-D animation, photography and communication design, among others. One of my greatest joys in teaching at the high-school level was my role as adviser for the school literary art magazine, where I helped the extra-curricular club turn the magazine from a xeroxed black-and-white booklet to a 60-page, full-color, top award-winning glossy magazine.
I continue to create art and exhibit my own work of painting, mixed-media, and photography, earning recognition and awards in regional shows. I also run a graphic design business where I work with clients to create inexpensive custom sites (that allow for easy personal editing) and many other graphic design materials. Most of all, I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to devote my time these days to design, illustration, and painting. Please let me know if you have an interest in any particular art work or would like to commission art. And I'm pleased to announce my move into children's book illustration and book design with a newly published book titled Kitten Caboodle.
My partner and I are lucky enough to divide our time between Ellsworth, Maine and Williamsburg, Virginia. We have two wonderful girls in college (seen below as young aspiring artists and book readers) and two scruffy dogs (probably hanging out on the couch).
